Youth News Week 11 – 2019

“Let us not allow this season of grace to pass in vain! Let us ask God to help us set out on a path of true conversion. Let us leave behind our selfishness and self-absorption and turn to Jesus’ Pasch. Let us stand beside our brothers and sisters in need, sharing our spiritual and material goods with them.”
Pope Francis’ Lenten Message 2019

This week at Chosen we learned about the Liturgical Season of Lent. The Catechism explains that “by the solemn forty days of Lent the Church unites herself each year to the mystery of Jesus in the desert.” CCC540 The liturgical colour changes to purple and our altars are without flowers as we do penance in preparation for the holy and triumphant season of Easter. We also learned that Lent is a time when, as Catholics, we perform acts of penance through prayer, fasting and almsgiving. We then took time in the Church to pray about and privately write down our Lenten commitments. We also had fun playing volleyball and basketball and enjoyed chocolate chip and blueberry pancakes to celebrate Shrove Tuesday. Parents, please note that we will not be having CHOSEN next week due to March Break. Students from Gr 5 to 8 are invited to join us when CHOSEN resumes Tuesday March 19th – the Solemnity of St Joseph – from 7-8:30pm at St Mary’s School. St Joseph, pray for us!

“We adore Thee, O Christ, and bless Thee. Because by Thy holy cross Thou hast redeemed the world.”

On Friday, Mar 8th our young adult group came together for a night of fun at the bowling alley. For pictures please see our Facebook page. Thanks to all of you for starting off the night by joining us to pray the Stations of the Cross at the church. It was good to have each of you there! May this time in prayer, journeying with Christ through His Passion and Death, draw you ever closer to Him this Lent!
Carpenter’s Cup Retreat for High School Students – High school aged men are invited to this time of retreat with Fr. John Perdue from March 22-24 at JPII House (820 Frank St. Ptbo). Excellent talks, time for prayer and sports challenges to see who takes home the Carpenter’s Cup!
Register at www.ptbovocations.ca/carpenterscup or by calling 705-874-1871.
Way of the Cross – Fr. Craig Cruikshank is inviting youth aged 13-18 to be part of this year’s re-enactment of Christ’s Passion through the streets of downtown Peterborough on Good Friday April 19th.
