2025 JUBILEE YEAR OF HOPE Pope Francis has declared 2025 as the Jubilee Year of Hope. A jubilee year is celebrated every 25 years, and our Bishop designates the churches with Jubilee Status. St. Mary’s Lindsay is among this honour and shared with St. Peter’s Cathedral in Peterborough, St. Michael’s in Cobourg, and St. Patrick’s in Kearney. As designated Churches, please make a pilgrimage during the holy jubilee year and obtain plenary indulgences. Within the Catholic Harold Christmas 2024 edition, Bishop Miehm has composed a great article and included explanation of the jubilee year and how to obtain plenary indulgences, there is also a calendar for events within our Diocese. WHAT ARE INDULGENCES? Indulgences are a means by which the Catholic Church grants remission of the temporal punishment due to sins that have already been forgiven. While the guilt of sin is removed through the Sacraments of Baptism and Confession, the consequences of sin may still require purification, either in this life or in Purgatory. Indulgences, which can be partial or plenary, are obtained under certain conditions and can be applied to oneself or to the souls in Purgatory. St Mary’s has been decreed to be a jubilee church. The conditions: 1) Visit this Church, 2) Go to confession (7 days before or after visiting this church), 3) Receive communion, 4) Pray for the Pope’s intentions, 5) Have a detachment from sin, 6) Intention to obtain an indulgence by doing this. How many indulgences can I receive? A plenary indulgence can only be obtained once per day. Matthew 16:19, Jesus grants Peter the “keys of the kingdom of heaven,” stating, “I will give to thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven.” This passage underscores the Church’s authority to bind and loose, which includes the power to remit temporal punishments through indulgences.
