Pastor’s Corner

Fr. Joseph LoJacono
As I announced last week, at the request of the Bishop and my provincial superior there will be a new pastor assigned to St. Mary’s. I will be assigned to St. Augustine of Canterbury, overseen by the IVE religious order. I would have been happy to continue here as pastor and I am happy to serve wherever my religious order calls me. I sincerely appreciate the welcome I received by the staff here, Karen, Valerie, Andrea, Diane, Al, the various parish groups, CWL, Knights of Columbus, St. Vincent de Paul, the Legion of Mary, St. Joseph Workers, Zita Devan and the finance committee, of happy memory Bill Debosky and the building committee, Gloria Broad and the Guys Mills board, the extraordinary ministers, the youth outreach, catechesis, Development and Peace. Thank you.
The new pastor will be Fr. Dominic Clovis, IVE, who currently serves as associate pastor at St. Augustine of Canterbury in Toronto. The new associate will be Fr. Martin Mairena, IVE, who has been in residence at Sacred Heart in Peterborough. These changes are effective September 1st. as announced by Bishop Daniel Miehm.
I hope you will welcome them.
I offer a few words of advice about the pastoral changes. The authentic Catholic Church will not change its perennial teaching about faith and morals. Likewise, as Vatican II taught and Pope Francis reiterated, the Liturgy including the form of the Mass is “a given” that we can’t make or change by our own will. Priests are called to defend and explain Catholic Tradition as part of the proclamation of the Gospel. While it is good and legitimate to voice your differences about approaches; it is part of Jesus’ teaching to try to work in harmony and charity with the priests to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Be charitable to your new pastor, pray for him, but don’t expect he will do pastoral ministry based on public opinion. The Gospel of Jesus Christ remains the same as always.
