Cannonization of Popes on 27 April 2014

At 10 a.m. Rome time this Sunday an historic event has taken place.

Two contemporary Popes are being canonized; Pope John XIII who reigned from 1958-63 and was known as Good Pope John for his openness and engagement with the world.

It was his vision that brought about the Second Vatican Council and ushered in many of the changes that a number of you can remember in the liturgy and the structures of the Church.

Pope John Paul II was a child of the 20th century, the first non-Italian pope in centuries. He was a player on the world stage helping in the fall of European Communism becoming the most traveled pope in history, establishing the World Youth Days, teaching doctrine and promoting popular devotions.

To commemorate this event, we are distributing prayer cards with the two Popes, and have special readings for the Sunday Masses.
