The Sacraments of Christian Initiation.

Important Information for Parents – Click to Read

The sacraments of Christian initiation – Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist – lay the foundations of every Christian life. “The sharing in the divine nature given to men through the grace of Christ bears a certain likeness to the origin, development, and nourishing of natural life. The faithful are born anew by Baptism, strengthened by the sacrament of Confirmation, and receive in the Eucharist the food of eternal life. By means of these sacraments of Christian initiation, they thus receive in increasing measure the treasures of the divine life and advance toward the perfection of charity.”

Dear Parents,

Big changes are on the way for the Sacramental Preparation in the Diocese of Peterborough. Bishop McGrattan, our Bishop of Peterborough, has asked all the parishes of the Diocese to offer a parish based Sacramental preparation that will be consistent in form and content. This initiative will help to coordinate the home, parish and school in nurturing the faith of your child and preparing him/her to receive the Sacraments.

Your child in Grade 2 is a potential candidate for receiving the Sacraments of First Reconciliation (confession) and First Communion next year. We will work closely with the school communities of St. Mary’s, St. Dominic’s and St. John Paul II. The schools will provide the religious and Family Life Education to your child and in collaboration the Parish will provide the Sacramental Preparation for your child.

In the Fall, there will be four sessions for parents to help you prepare your child for First Reconciliation. At least one parent must attend all sessions with their child.
Session #1 is Tuesday, September 13 OR Wednesday, September 14 at 6:30 p.m in St. Mary’s School.
Session #2 – Sunday, September 25 – at the 9 OR 11 a.m. Mass in the Church AND 1 hour after the Mass in St. Mary’s School.
Session #3 – Sunday, October 16 – at the 9 OR 11 a.m. Mass in the Church AND 1 hour after the Mass in St. Mary’s School.
Session #4 – Sunday, November 6, at the 9 OR 11 a.m. Mass in the Church AND 1 hour after the Mass in the Church.

For those who have completed the preparation and wish to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation, the celebration of First Reconciliation will be Tuesday, December 8 at 11:30 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church.

The same format for First Communion will take place in the winter and spring of 2017 beginning in February.

There will be a fee of $25 for each Sacramental Preparation Program totaling $50 over the year to help offset the cost of the materials. If you need assistance with this, please let us know.

In following Canon Law and Diocesan Policies your child must be baptized. If he/she has not been baptized yet, please feel welcome to contact us at your earliest convenience. If your child has been baptized in a parish other than St. Mary’s, Lindsay, a copy of the Baptismal Certificate must be provided. You will need to contact the parish in which your child was baptized. Please bring a copy of the Baptismal Certificate to Session # 1.

The parish community is looking forward to supporting your child in prayer as they prepare to receive the sacraments and celebrating this time of God’s grace with your child and your family.

May God bless you and your families.

Sincerely in Christ,
Fr. Tom Lynch, Fr. Eric Mason and Sister Loretta LaPointe
