The meeting will be followed by a “Pot-Luck” lunch, and all members and spouses are invited.

The Chief’s Charity Pasta Feast

Thursday, January 28, from noon to 2 pm at Victoria Park Armoury.

Tickets adults $12; children under 12 $6.

Please support the Kawartha Lakes Food Source. Buy tickets for yourselves or order in food for your business. It is a great meal!

Tickets are available at: Kawartha Lakes Food Source Office, Williamson Fuels Ltd., or at the Armoury door.

Food collected by KLFS goes out to all the food banks including the Central Food Cupboard, supported by the SSVP of St. Mary’s

Clothing & Shoes Drive

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul wish to thank St. Mary’s Parish for their support in the Clothing & Shoes Drive. It was a great success!

We are now receiving many calls for warm clothing for the children. If anyone has winter snowsuites or other warm clothing ,boots & shoes they wish to donate to SSVP , please call the Parish and SSVP will pick up the clothing left at the Rectory.

There are notices on the bulletin boards of St.Mary’s Church to ask the members of St.Mary’s if they would again sponsor families this Christmas. The forms to be returned to SSVP via the Rectory or collection baskets used at the Masses.

On October 22nd all the members of SSVP are asked to come to the St. Mary’s church’s chapel at 4pm for a photo-shoot.

The next meeting for SSVP will be on November 24th at 1pm in the chapel.

God our Father,
you gave Vincent de Paul
the courage and holiness of an apostle for the well-being of the poor
and the formation of the clergy.
Help us to be zealous
in continuing his work.

As members of the SSVP, we ask all to pray for our Society and its members and clients, so that we may continue our work with humility and respect for human dignity, assessing needs without judgment, while truly bearing witness to the love that God has for all people, especially those most in need.

Our Mission Statement

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is a lay Catholic organization whose mission is to live the Gospel message by serving Christ in the poor with love, respect, justice and joy.

As Vincentians, this implies that we:

See Christ in anyone who suffers.
Come together as a family.
Have personal contact with the poor.
Help in any possible way.

Purpose of the Society

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul provides emergency help for people in difficult circumstances, whether in need of food, clothing, medication, or threatened with eviction or discontinued utilities. Assistance from the SSVP is not intended to be a means of continuing support. We encourage people to become self-sufficient.

St. Mary’s Conference

In Lindsay, the SSVP was formed in 1923, and presently has 30 active members. We unite our work with students, parishioners, and friends and with volunteers from five local churches at the Central Food Cupboard on Monday and Friday mornings. As well, we provide assistance by phone and our extensive Christmas basket program, adopt-an-angel and giving tree.

A Brief History

In 1833, Frederick Ozanam, a law student in Paris, was shocked when he saw the squalid conditions in which the poor were living. He organized a small group of students into a society dedicated to serving the poor: they visited poor people, and provided emergency assistance through food, clothing and comfort. Where it was appropriate, they gave spiritual guidance.

They named their society after St. Vincent de Paul (c.1580-1660), a priest in France who dedicated his life to founding charitable organizations to help the poor, prisoners, galley slaves, the ill, and all the less fortunate members of the area.

The SSVP came to Canada in 1846. Today, about one million people in more than 132 countries on five continents are members of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, and they continue to reach out in love to serve Jesus Christ in his suffering brothers and sisters. About two-thirds are in developing countries and many are twinned with Canadian conferences.

In the Diocese of Peterborough, the Society is organized into particular councils and conferences in participating parishes. Each local SSVP is dedicated to helping anyone in need without regard to colour, race or religion. Funds for this work come from special collections taken at the local churches.
