Exploring the Mass – No. 9 “Glory to God:

History:

The Gloria is a joyful hymn whose content is primarily that of praising God, emphasizes the festive and special character of certain Sundays and feasts. Mozart, Beethoven and others wrote magnificent settings for this.

General Instuction of the Roman Missal(The Church’s Textbook):

The Gloria is an ancient hymn in which the Church, assembled in the Spirit, praises and prays to the Father and Jesus the Lamb of Sacrifice. Like most hymns we know by heart, the New Translation means we will have to relearn this hymn of praise.

Questions for Reflection:

How do I give glory to God in my daily life and work?

Do I praise God even in difficult times and thank him in joyful ones?

Scripture: Col. 3: 16, Luke 2: 14

Below is the present text of the ‘Gloria’ and the new translation.

Present Text

Glory to God in the highest,

and peace to his people on earth.

Lord God, heavenly king almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks,

we praise you for your glory.

Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father,

Lord God, Lamb of God,

you take away the sin of the world:

have mercy on us

you are seated at the right hand of the Father:

receive our prayer.

For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord,

You alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the

Holy Spirit,

in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

New Text
